When an animal goes missing, whether it is farm livestock, a family pet, a non dangerous exotic animal, or a protected wildlife species, the chances of recovery fall with every hour that passes. Airframe provides aerial search and recovery support using thermal imaging drones capable of detecting body heat through dense cover, in low light, and across terrain that ground search teams cannot efficiently cover on foot.

Our pilots hold CAA commercial certifications and are trained to operate in time-sensitive environments. We work alongside your team, your land manager, or your rescue organisation to coordinate search zones, direct ground teams, and maximise coverage in the shortest possible time.

What We Can Find

Our Search & Rescue Services

Every search is different. Our capability covers a wide range of animal types, environments, and client situations — from urgent same-day deployments to planned monitoring programmes across large estates and conservation areas.

S.01

LIVESTOCK SEARCH & RECOVERY

Covering large acreages quickly is beyond the reach of ground teams working alone. We deploy thermal drones to sweep fields, hedgerows, and wooded areas to locate missing cattle, sheep, horses, pigs, or poultry — day or night, with or without existing tags or trackers.

S.02

PET & COMPANION ANIMAL SEARCH

Lost dogs, cats, and other companion animals are often found in cover that visual ground searches miss entirely. Our thermal sensors detect body heat through vegetation, under vehicles, and in low light urban environments, enabling faster, more targeted recovery than ground only efforts.

ZOO & COLLECTION ANIMAL LOCATION

Wildlife parks, zoos, and private animal collections sometimes face the challenge of a displaced or missing non dangerous animal. We provide discreet aerial search support to locate escaped animals, reptiles, mammals, and other non dangerous species, working directly with your team before the situation escalates further.

INJURED OR DISTRESSED ANIMAL LOCATION

Where an animal is believed to be injured and stationary, thermal detection is highly effective — identifying heat signatures in dense cover, on steep ground, or in locations inaccessible to ground rescue teams. We locate the animal and relay precise GPS coordinates to your team on the ground.

Capability

How Drone Thermal Search Works

Thermal imaging detects body heat rather than reflected light. This makes it effective in conditions where standard cameras and visual searches fail entirely: darkness, dense vegetation, and wide open terrain where a manual sweep takes hours.

STEP A

RAPID SEARCH ZONE MAPPING

The affected area is divided into search zones based on last known position, terrain type, and animal behaviour. Our pilot plans systematic sweep routes that maximise thermal coverage in minimum time, ensuring no area is missed.

STEP B

THERMAL DETECTION IN REAL TIME

The DJI Matrice 4T carries a thermal camera capable of detecting animal body heat at significant range. Our pilot monitors the thermal feed live and flags any heat signatures that match the target animal size and heat profile.

STEP C

GPS COORDINATE RELAY

When a heat signature is confirmed, precise GPS coordinates are relayed directly to your ground team. This removes the guesswork and gets people to exactly the right location, without delay.

STEP D

VISUAL CONFIRMATION & HANDOVER

Once located, our pilot maintains visual contact using the standard RGB camera to confirm identity and monitor the animal condition while your team moves in. We stay on station until recovery is confirmed or you advise otherwise.

Common Questions

What to Expect

Thermal imaging detects body heat rather than reflected light, which means it can identify an animal heat signature through foliage, under vehicles, and in undergrowth that a standard camera or the human eye would completely miss. It is not infallible: very dense canopy or certain ground cover materials can reduce effectiveness, but in the majority of search situations, thermal significantly outperforms a visual only search.

Response times depend on your location and our operational availability at the time of enquiry. Within our Emergency Deployment Coverage Zone, approximately two hours' drive from Basingstoke, same day mobilisation is usually achievable. Across the Extended Coverage Zone, deployment is typically next day or shortly thereafter. In both cases this remains subject to crew availability, airspace clearance and weather conditions. For urgent requirements, call us directly and we will tell you exactly what is achievable rather than offer a generic commitment.

Yes. Thermal imaging is particularly effective at night and in the predawn hours when ambient temperature is lower: this increases the contrast between an animal body heat and the surrounding environment, making detection clearer. All night operations are conducted in full compliance with CAA regulations.

The more information you can provide, the better. Useful details include: the last known location and when the animal was last seen; the animal species, size, and any identifying characteristics; terrain type and site access points; whether any existing ground search has been conducted; and any relevant restrictions such as proximity to controlled airspace, airports, or public roads. We will advise on what else we need when you make contact.

Yes, and we actively encourage this. Our pilot relays GPS coordinates and live aerial observation to your ground team in real time. We can communicate directly with rescue coordinators, estate managers, land owners, or any other party involved in the recovery effort. Multi agency coordination is well within our operational experience.

We work to two defined coverage zones, both measured by road drive time from our base in Basingstoke, Hampshire.

Our Emergency Deployment Coverage Zone covers everywhere within approximately two hours' drive, including Hampshire, Berkshire, Surrey, Sussex, Wiltshire, Dorset, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Greater London, Bristol and Bath. Same-day deployment is available in this zone.

Our Extended Coverage Zone runs from there out to approximately three hours' drive, including Devon, east Kent, the West Midlands, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and the South Wales M4 corridor. Next-day deployment is standard here, with same-day where operationally possible.

Beyond three hours from Basingstoke we do not offer emergency deployment for this service. Remote and rural locations inside our zones are fully supported. See our coverage map for full detail. View coverage map.

Cost depends on the nature of the operation: deployment location, estimated duration, and whether specialist equipment or multi pilot coordination is required. We provide a clear cost assessment as early in the process as possible. In emergency situations, we prioritise mobilisation first and confirm costs in parallel to avoid unnecessary delay.

Yes, and we think it is important to be upfront about this. Where a missing or escaped animal presents a direct risk to public safety, for example a dangerous exotic species such as a large predator, that situation falls within the remit of the emergency services and we would not deploy. Our role is to support situations where the animal itself does not present a public safety threat and where the police or other emergency services are not already the lead agency. If you are unsure whether your situation falls within our scope, call us and we will advise you honestly. Where we cannot help directly, we will tell you so promptly so you can contact the right people without delay.

We also cannot offer emergency deployment beyond approximately three hours' drive from Basingstoke. If you are outside our coverage zones we will say so straight away and, where we can, point you towards a suitable operator closer to you.
